Power in motion : How industrial pumps keep your world flowing

On a quiet morning in Brighton, the sun casts light over the remains of the iconic West Pier. A small flock of birds perches on its rusting beams, undisturbed by the waves crashing below. It’s a picture of balance—nature and steel, stillness and motion.

It’s also a metaphor for something bigger.

Much like the tide that moves beneath those birds, your industrial pumps are the unseen force driving the lifeblood of countless industries across the UK and beyond.

From water treatment facilities and energy plants to chemical manufacturing and food processing, your pumps are essential in keeping your operations running smoothly, quietly, reliably, and powerfully.

THE HEARTBEAT OF INDUSTRY

At Cougar Pumps, we understand the critical role industrial pumps play in your operations. Your pumps don’t just move liquids; they move progress. Whether it’s a high-pressure multistage pump for oil and gas or a corrosion-resistant centrifugal pump for chemical processing, technology is designed to perform under pressure—literally.

And like those birds on Brighton’s historic pier, your pumps are built to withstand the elements. Salt, sand, heat, or cold—your equipment is engineered for durability and longevity in even the harshest environments.

Contact us today and let’s keep your pumps flowing in the right direction…

AODD (AIR-OPERATED DOUBLE DIAPHRAGM) pumps for hazardous industries

Double-diaphragm pumps are an established solution for handling aggressive or hazardous fluids in a variety of application areas. Designed to handle viscous, abrasive, and corrosive fluids, they are ideal for chemical processing and transfer, water treatment, paper and pulp, as well as food and pharmaceutical industries.

Air operated double diaphragm pumps have the following advantages:

✅ Compressed air supply: double diaphragm pumps do not require the use of electricity, a factor that makes them extremely safe within potentially explosive and flammable environments
✅ Design features: the special design configuration, in addition to making them easily transportable within the plant, allows safe and efficient transfer of a wide range of liquids even with the presence of suspended solids such as sludge, wastewater, sand, leaves and branches
✅ Construction materials: the components of membrane pumps, due to the use of special construction materials, are subject to limited wear and tear. This factor is also emphasised by the special design features that avoid fluid contact with the main pump components, thus reducing the risk of wear
✅ Self-priming capabilities: double diaphragm pumps are capable of dry running and demonstrate excellent self-priming capabilities
✅ Safety certifications: double diaphragm pumps can be ATEX and IECEx certified and therefore used within potentially hazardous or explosion-prone industries

SO HOW DO THEY WORK?

✅ Imagine two flexible diaphragms connected by a shaft. These diaphragms move back and forth (similarly to lungs)
✅ Air is pumped into one side of the pump, pushing one diaphragm forward
✅ This movement forces liquid out of the pump on that side
✅ At the same time, the opposite diaphragm creates a vacuum, pulling new liquid into the pump
✅ A valve switches the air to the other side, and the process repeats

Whether you’re dealing with aggressive chemicals or ATEX-rated environments, AODD pumps offer you a reliable and flexible solution.

When selecting a pump for your process, one of the most important factors to consider is fluid viscosity. Whether you’re pumping water-thin solvents or thick sticky slurries, viscosity can significantly affect flow rate, pump life, and overall system performance.

If you’re ready to find the right pump for your application, get in touch with us today for your pump requirements.

Improve your brewery operations

Grundfos NBSE pumps with integrated variable frequency drive motors revolutionise operations, boost efficiency, streamline maintenance, and cut your costs.

Split-coupled end-suction pumps with NEMA MLE motors and ANSI flange fittings.

Compared to traditional installations that require communication cables running back to the PLC from each pump, the cascade functionality of the Grundfos MLE eliminates lengthy cable runs.

The setup requires only one wire with three conductors and a daisy-chained communication wire between the pumps.

A recent case study demonstrated that the brewery achieved 100% capacity with three NBSE pumps, leaving the fourth as a redundant backup. Additionally, redundant master controls and pressure sensors ensured fail-safe operation, reducing downtime risks.

Get in touch today and discover how this intelligent pump solution from Grundfos supports your sustainability goals while enhancing performance and reliability.
